Cold Water

Just the other day, because of a broken water heater, I had to have a cold shower on a rainy day. I warned my husband that if he heard any screaming it would be me and he needn’t worry!

This reminded me of my Mum. She had this theory that a cold shower would help during winter — you wouldn’t feel the cold after it! My brothers, older (and perhaps, wiser) than I was, refused to try this. I was about 5 years old. Every morning, before school, Mum would get me into the tub and give me a cold shower. Then she’d have one herself. Both of us would be screaming for the first minute of our showers! Once you got used to the cold, the shower was really bracing.

Cold showers, like writing, take practice and getting used to.

Sitting with our blank page, is sometimes like us waiting by a pool — too scared to jump in because of the cold! But our words won’t flow until we start writing. As Kurt Vonnegut said about writing : ‘We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.’

Today, you and I, are called to jump in and write bravely!
